One of the most common questions we receive from new members of the STXGMRS community is, “How do I get my GMRS license?”
The good news is that obtaining a GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) license is simple, affordable, and does not require an exam.
Why Do I Need a GMRS License?
A GMRS license issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allows you to legally operate GMRS radios on licensed channels, including access to GMRS repeaters that can dramatically extend your communication range. A GMRS license is required before transmitting on GMRS frequencies. (Help Center)
Benefits of a GMRS License
- Access to GMRS repeaters
- Higher power operation than FRS radios
- Improved communication range
- Coverage for your immediate family under a single license
- Valid for 10 years
- No test or examination required (GMRS)
What Does It Cost?
The FCC currently charges $35 for a GMRS license. The license is valid for 10 years and covers your immediate family members, including spouses, children, parents, grandparents, siblings, and certain in-laws. (GMRS)
Step 1: Obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN)
Before applying for a license, you’ll need an FCC Registration Number (FRN).
Visit:
FCC CORES Registration System
Create an account and obtain your FRN. Be sure to save this number, as you will use it whenever you interact with FCC licensing systems. (GMRS)
Step 2: Apply for a GMRS License
After receiving your FRN, log in to the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS).
Visit:
FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS)
Once logged in:
- Select “Apply for a New License”
- Choose “ZA – General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)”
- Complete the application
- Review and certify your submission
- Submit the application for processing (GMRS)
Step 3: Pay the License Fee
After submitting your application, you’ll be directed to pay the $35 application fee through the FCC payment system. Your application will not be processed until payment is received. (GMRS)
Step 4: Receive Your Callsign
Most applicants receive their GMRS callsign within a few business days after payment has been processed. Once issued, you may begin legally operating on GMRS frequencies and repeaters. (GMRS)
